As an educator I use mistakes as teachable moments. I teach American History and our students take a state exam at the end of the year. For 2 days our history department worked with 8th grade students that were stuggling. We chose to work with them on a Thursday and Friday. It was 2 days of games, puzzeles, jeopardy, and a lot of hands on activities. On Friday we used the gym to create our sets for our reenactments. We need to clean up early because they were going to use the gym for a pep-rally for the whole school. I was asked to take a reading test during the rally. I said it would be ok. Exhausted, sweaty, dirty, and with heel pain I dragged myself to the gym. The whole school was there 4 teachers were taking the test. The mc asked the students, "What test should Mrs. C take?" They all yelled, "MATH!!!!!" Crap, I had not worked on a math problem in many years. I looked at the test and tried for the first 3 problems and I was too tired to care. I just guessed. I have never been a good guesser and I wasn't that day. The scores were in; Math teacher took reading test, 100, reading teacher took science test 100, Science teacher took history test 90, and Mrs. C 40!!!!!! I wanted to die. Two kids looked at me and I said, "I can't believe i got 4 right!" It is going to be a while before i can live this down.
